Avoid the Need for Extensive Fire Damage Repair during the Holidays

January 12th, 2020 · No Comments

When you think about the upcoming holidays, what comes to mind? Maybe you picture sitting by the fire or opening presents with your family. Perhaps you think about eating good food or playing in the snow until you can’t feel your toes. No matter what you envision, chances are fire safety isn’t in the picture. We don’t blame you because with so much fun and happiness to be had, who has time—or desire—to worry about safety hazards. Besides, what could go wrong in your home? Yet, fire damage repair services exist for a reason, and it’s up to you to make sure you don’t run into any fire problems over the holiday. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

  • Before you go to bed or leave your house to holiday shop or visit, make sure you turn off your lighted decorations. We know it’s tempting to leave your decorations turned on throughout the night, but if you do this, you never know if a fire could start. Your pet could bump a decoration or material could rub against a lighted decoration or some piece of the decoration could come loose. Be careful, no matter what your first instinct is.
  • If you want to avoid the need for fire damage repair or smoke damage removal, be sure to water your Christmas tree (if you brought in a real one, of course) and keep it hydrated. If you let your tree become dry and brittle, it will become kindle once a fire starts.
  • Make sure the batteries in your fire detectors are working. A fire detector will help you identify a fire more quickly so you can avoid more extensive damage.
  • Keep flammable items away from your fireplace, especially wrapped gifts. Don’t allow children or animals to play near the fireplace. And, if you have to step away for a while, ask a responsible adult to keep an eye on the fire.
  • Avoid wearing loose, flowing clothes when you use the oven or stove. Also, keep paper towels and other flammable items away from this heat source.
